A cycling race takes a lot of effort to run. Marshals must be posted along the course to supervise the race and watch for danger, volunteers are often needed to direct people to parking and to registration, course materials such as signage, barriers, and tape must be deployed and then cleaned up after the race.
Almost every race in the country relies heavily on volunteers to help make races run smoothly, and Eastern Collegiate Cycling Races are no different.
The ECCC insists that event promoters keep registration fees as low as possible to keep collegiate cycling affordable and accessible to students. Collegiate events are typically much cheaper to race in than other local non-collegiate events, but still face the same costs.
To help offset costs, the ECCC expects that teams will volunteer at the races they attend. If your team is bringing 4+ people to a race, we expect you to fill AT LEAST one volunteer slot (at least 4 hours of volunteering). Larger teams are expected to volunteer more.
Volunteering expectations first defined and announced September 2024
We highly encourage volunteers to commit to helping out in the weeks and days leading up to the event - race organizers rely on having data beforehand so they can develop a plan for the event. Please check out the event calendar and the flyer for each event to see if each event notes how to sign up for volunteering.
If you find yourself at an event and wish to volunteer on-the-spot, please check with the registration tent. Staff around the registration tent may be able to deploy you immediately, or will know who to contact to figure out where additional hands will be helpful!
